I am writing to share a brief excerpt from my oral autobiography detailing my background and journey as a stone artist.
Born in California in 1969, I eventually moved to Arkansas in 2004 to be closer to my wife’s family [at the time, divorced in 2015]. In 2008, drawn by the clean waters of the area, my family and I settled in Hot Springs. Prior to this move, I was self-employed in the home-improvement industry. However, following the housing market collapse, I shifted my focus to farming, drawing on experience I gained in Mississippi during the mid-90s. With over 20 acres of land in Hot Springs, I looked for new ways to utilize my property, I started to grow food for profit.
My transition into art was unexpected. While preparing crops for the local farmers market, I decided to create a garden marker for my okra. Using only a railroad spike, a finishing nail punch, and a hammer, I carved the word "okra" into a 12-inch stone. I continued to experiment with simple designs and brought a few of these carvings to the market. To my surprise, the stone carvings sold while the produce did not, marking the true beginning of my career as an stone artist.
Within three years, I became one of the top artists in Hot Springs. Today, I am recognized as one of the few successful stone artists in the country and the only artist in the South practicing this specific type of carving.
Since 2011, I have sold over 8,000 pieces.
